This course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the music business, and the interrelationships between art, technology, and business.

Using both case studies and lectures, you will learn the nature of copyright, the value of songs and their potential revenue streams, the role of music publishers, and the role of the artist and their surrounding team. You will also examine record labels, their personnel, and the basic elements of recording and production agreements. This course will also provide you with a thorough study of the methods, technologies and new revenue streams involved in the digital distribution of music. You will explore fundamental principles of music marketing, promotion and publicity, and apply those skills in practical, real world applications and assignments.

Alex Grigg is a veteran music industry professional with over 25 years of experience in the for-profit and non-profit sectors of the music and live events business. He is a highly experienced event producer and executive who has helped facilitate some of Canada’s largest events including the 2009 Winter Paralympic Games and the Ambleside Live Concert Series which included shows headlined by Ed Sheeran and Kenny Chesney.
