Musical Styles & Genres MUS1010T

In this learning module, students will be introduced to musical styles and genres of the 1940s. Students will learn about Tin Pan Alley and the birth of music publishing, significant songwriters of the decade, important artists, and more.

In this learning module, students will be introduced to musical styles and genres of the 1950s, including bebop, rhythm and blues, early rock 'n' roll, bubblegum pop, and doo wop. Students will also learn about key artists of the era.

In this learning module, students will be provided with a broad and thorough introduction to the music of the 1960s. Students will be introduced to surf rock, folk revival, and key artists of the decade including Dick Dale, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Beach Boys, and many others.

In this learning module, students will be provided with a comprehensive introduction to the music of the 1970s. Students will learn about a range of popular musical genres including soft pop, disco, glam rock, hard rock, and arena rock. Students will also learn about key artists including Elton John, the Jackson Five, The Carpenters, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Queen, Styx, Bee Gees, and many others.

In this learning module, students will be provided with a detailed introduction to the music of the 1980s. Students will learn about the rise of MTV and popular genres including electronic/synth pop, brit pop, American alternative, American new wave, brit new wave, hit soundtracks, and dance music, as well as key artists of the decade.

In this learning module, students will be provided with a broad and thorough introduction to the music of the 1990s. Students will learn about principal genres including grunge, nu metal, skater punk/pop punk, hard rock, and new country, as well as key artists of the decade.

In this learning module, students will be introduced to the musical styles and genres of the 2000s. Students will learn about principal genres including pop, hip-hop, crunk, trap music, hard rock, Santana revival, pop punk/pop rock, nu metal, dubstep, EDM, emo rock, country, and Canadiana, as well as key artists of the decade.
