This course will provide a thorough insight into auditory perception as it relates to music production and audio mixing techniques. Students will be introduced to the skills and strategies used by professional music producers in order to develop their critical listening skills.

Weekly training drills will allow for analysis and comparative studies of different styles of mixing. Students will learn to identify spectral content depth and spectral balances in order to recognize the sonic features that can positively or negatively impact a final audio mix and how subjective impressions of timbre relate to physical control parameters. The ability to quickly focus on subtle details of sound and make decisions about them is an essential skill of a music producer.

About Course Credit

If you choose to take this course for credit, you will be required to attend the instructor-led virtual classes for the course and record your attendance through our Learning Management System (LMS). To receive credit for the course, you must complete all course evaluations and obtain a minimum final grade of 60%. If you enroll in a course for credit, our Registrar's office will schedule a meeting with you to review the For Credit requirements in advance of the course start date. If you choose the Not for Credit option when you enroll, you will still be registered in the same course and have access to all of the same lectures and materials as the For Credit students, but you will not be able to apply the course as a credit towards one of Metalworks Institute's Online Diploma Programs.

Syllabus

All of Metalworks Institute's online courses are divided into learning modules which are outlined below. A more detailed syllabus is provided once students are registered.

In this learning module, students will be introduced to critical listening and technical ear training. Key concepts and skills include ear training vs. critical listening and applying critical listening skills to composition, arranging, and mixing. Students will also be introduced to audio fundamentals including tuning and pitch, cycles per second, measurement of tuning, and the piano keyboard.
