Electronic Music Production Online Diploma

This course will provide students with an introduction to the theoretical and creative principles used in sound for motion picture, television, and other visual entertainment media. During this course, students will gain insight to the history of motion picture sound, terminology, technology, and post-production concepts. This course will also introduce students to the techniques and practices of the sound designer, sound editor, dialogue editor, sound effects editor, music editor, and re-recording mixer in the film and television industries.

This course will provide students with broad and thorough insight into auditory perception as it relates to music production and audio mixing techniques. During this course, students will be introduced to the skills and strategies used by professional music producers to develop their critical listening skills. Through weekly training drills, analysis, and comparative studies of different styles of mixing, students will identify spectral content depth and spectral balances in order to identify the sonic features that can positively or negatively impact a final audio mix, and learn how subjective impressions of timbre relate to physical control parameters. The ability to quickly focus on subtle details of sound and make decisions about them is an essential skill of a music producer.

This course will provide students with a comprehensive practical introduction to mixing techniques and digital mixing technologies. During this course, students will be introduced to the stages of the mixing process including equalization, panning, dynamic processing, effects processing, and automation techniques from both an artistic and technical perspective.

This course will provide students with the essential technical, creative, and practical skills used to create professional recordings. During this course, students will explore composition, mixing, sound design, MIDI programming, and sampling techniques using a variety of digital audio workstations and software to facilitate effective digital arrangements. Students will support the development of these skills through a variety of in-class assignments.

This course will provide students with comprehensive practical applications of audio signal processing devices used in live sound reinforcement. During this course, students will apply various processing techniques using effects and dynamics processors including equalization, compressors, expanders gates, reverbs, and delays.

This course will provide students with a broad introduction to the theoretical, technical, creative, and artistic principles of sound and recording in the digital domain. During this course, students will be introduced to digital audio basics, hardware, software, and interfaces through theory, application, and operating principles.

This course will provide audio production and engineering focused students with a broad introduction to the role of music in film and television through the study of terminology, aesthetics, process, equipment, and the technical aspects used in film scoring including, sessions setups, composition and editing techniques, and mixing considerations as well as the roles of the music editor, the composer, the recording engineer on the scoring stage, the mix engineer and the re-recording engineer. During this course, students will explore various composers and scores through ‘case studies’ and analysis and begin to apply these concepts through various practical assignments. Students are expected to have knowledge of recording engineering techniques and technologies, MIDI, and a thorough understanding of Pro Tools.
